Welcome to Hard Histories at Hopkins: The Substack
We'll keep you up-to-date here starting in January 2022
Happy new year!
If you’re receiving this message, we’ve noticed you following our work at Hard Histories at Hopkins. Maybe you’ve attended one of our events or you’ve been a speaker. Perhaps we’ve heard from you via email, or you’re an alum of the Hard Histories Lab. However you’ve come to us, welcome back!
Starting in January 2022, we’re launching this Substack — occasional messages from Hard Histories at Hopkins. Follow us here and you’ll be up-to-date on new research, what we’re reading, public events, and more.
News! This semester, we’re thrilled to welcome to the Lab Dr. Kim Gallon, PhD, MS, MLIS, a visiting associate professor in History of Medicine at JHU School of Medicine and the founder and executive director of COVID BLACK. Dr. Gallon will be directing students research for the spring 2022 term, along with graduate student Kendra Grisson from the JHU History Department. Stay tuned here from news about their projects.
Event! Among our recent research projects has been an investigation into the lives of enslaved workers on the land that is today JHU’s Homewood Campus, with a special focus on the Wyman family’s household. Holly Nelson and Marvis Gutierrez led this investigation, one that connects to an Inheritance Baltimore event coming up Friday January 21, 2022 on the Homewood campus: “Ritual of Remembrance: A musical celebration honoring Homewood's Black ancestors.” More info can be found here:
Until the next time, MSJ.
